Cable Recycling
Mechanical Cable Recycling – Sustainable Recovery of Valuable Metals
Efficient Raw Material Extraction from Scrap Cables
Cables and wires contain valuable raw materials such as copper, aluminum, and high-quality plastics. However, these materials do not have to be disposed of after use. Through mechanical cable recycling, the individual components can be efficiently separated and returned to the economic cycle as high-quality secondary raw materials.
Mechanical cable recycling is an important part of a sustainable circular economy. Modern processing plants enable the almost complete recovery of valuable metals and help conserve natural resources, reduce energy consumption, and lower CO₂ emissions.
What is mechanical cable recycling?
In mechanical cable recycling, scrap cables and wires are processed exclusively using physical and mechanical methods. The goal is to cleanly separate the metallic conductors from the plastic sheathing and other components without chemically altering the materials.
Depending on the material type, the following cables, among others, can be processed:
- Power cables
- Copper cables
- Aluminum cables
- Underground cables
- Installation cables
- Data and communication cables
- Control cables
- Energy cables
- Coaxial cables
- Production waste from the cable industry
- Cable scrap from industry, construction, and demolition
Modern processing technologies produce high-quality metal and plastic fractions that can be reused as valuable secondary raw materials.
How does mechanical cable recycling work?
The recycling of cables takes place in several precisely coordinated process steps. The aim is to separate metals and plastics into pure fractions as much as possible and achieve high material quality.
1. Acceptance and Pre-sorting
The delivered cables are first sorted by material type, cable type, and composition. Contaminants or unsuitable components are removed to ensure an efficient recycling process.
2. Mechanical Shredding
Powerful shredders and granulators reduce the cables into small pieces of material. Shredding separates metal conductors from plastic insulation and prepares them for further separation.
3. Material Separation
In the next step, the different materials are separated using modern separation technologies.
Among others, the following are used:
- Magnetic separators for removing ferrous metals
- Granulation and cutting technology for uniform material size
- Air classifiers for separating light plastic components
- Vibration and density separation systems for separating metals and plastics
- Sensor and sorting technology for further quality optimization
The combination of these methods results in particularly pure material fractions with high recycling quality.
4. Quality Control
After processing, the recovered metal and plastic fractions are inspected and tested for purity and particle size. This ensures consistent high quality for subsequent processing.
Which raw materials are recovered during cable recycling?
Mechanical cable recycling enables the recovery of various valuable materials.
Copper
Copper is one of the most important recycled metals. It has excellent electrical conductivity and can be recycled repeatedly with almost no loss of quality. The recovered copper is used, among other things, in the electrical industry, mechanical engineering, and cable production.
Aluminum
Aluminum can also be recovered efficiently. Compared to primary production, recycled aluminum requires only a fraction of the energy, thereby significantly reducing CO₂ emissions.
Plastics
The separated plastic sheaths are also recycled – depending on material type and quality – and used as raw material for new plastic products or technical applications.
Advantages of Mechanical Cable Recycling
Mechanical cable recycling offers numerous ecological and economic advantages.
Conservation of natural resources
The recovery of copper, aluminum, and plastics reduces the demand for primary raw materials and contributes to the long-term safeguarding of valuable resources.
Environmental and climate protection
Recycling metals requires significantly less energy than extracting them from ores. This reduces CO₂ emissions and provides lasting environmental relief.
High material purity
State-of-the-art processing plants enable an almost pure separation of individual materials and produce high-quality secondary raw materials for industry.
Economic efficiency
Recycled metals are an important component of modern production processes and offer an economical alternative to primary materials.
Circular economy
By returning high-quality raw materials to the material cycle, waste is reduced and the sustainable use of existing resources is promoted.
Sustainability through modern cable processing
With the increasing demand for copper and aluminum, mechanical cable recycling is becoming increasingly important. Modern recycling plants enable the efficient processing of various types of cables and ensure that valuable raw materials are not lost.
Through innovative shredding and separation technologies, high-quality metals and plastics are recovered and fed back into industrial production. Cable recycling thus makes an important contribution to resource conservation, climate protection, and a functioning circular economy.
