Wood recycling
Mechanical Wood Recycling – Sustainable Utilization of Waste Wood and Wood Residues
Preserving Valuable Resources and Protecting the Environment
Wood is one of the oldest and most sustainable materials in the world. Whether in construction, the furniture industry, packaging, or production – wood is used in a variety of ways. After the end of its useful life, however, this valuable material does not have to be disposed of. Through mechanical wood recycling, waste wood and wood residues can be efficiently processed and reused as a high-quality raw material.
Mechanical wood recycling is an important component of a modern circular economy. It conserves natural resources, reduces waste volumes, and enables the production of new wood-based materials or the energetic use of non-materially recoverable wood fractions. In this way, wood as a raw material remains in the economic cycle for as long as possible.
What is mechanical wood recycling?
In mechanical wood recycling, waste wood and wood residues are processed exclusively by physical and mechanical methods. The goal is to separate wood from foreign materials, shred it to a defined particle size, and prepare it for reuse.
Depending on the origin, the following materials, among others, can be processed:
- Construction and demolition wood
- Packaging wood
- Pallets
- Wooden boxes
- Furniture wood
- Production residues from the timber industry
- Particleboard
- Solid wood
- Formwork wood
- Sawmill residues
- untreated and – depending on approval and process – suitable treated wood fractions
Modern processing technologies produce high-quality wood chips or wood shavings that can be used as secondary raw materials in various industrial sectors.
How does mechanical wood recycling work?
The recycling of wood takes place in several coordinated process steps. Modern plants ensure efficient processing and high quality of the recovered wood fractions.
1. Acceptance and Sorting
The delivered wood waste is first inspected and sorted by wood type, quality, and contamination. Foreign materials and unsuitable materials are removed to ensure high-quality further processing.
2. Mechanical Shredding
Powerful shredders and wood chippers reduce the material to a defined size. Depending on the later intended use, wood chips, wood shavings, or other wood fractions are produced.
3. Removal of Foreign Materials
During processing, nails, screws, fittings, and other metallic components are removed using magnetic separators. In addition, screening and separation techniques are used to reliably separate stones, plastics, or other foreign materials.
4. Classification and Quality Control
The processed wood fractions are sorted by particle size and quality. Regular quality controls ensure that the material meets the requirements of the respective further processing.
What products are created during wood recycling?
Mechanically processed wood can be reused in numerous areas.
Typical areas of application are:
- Production of particleboard
- Production of wood-based materials
- Furniture industry
- Packaging industry
- Wood fiberboards
- Gardening and landscaping
- Bedding material
- Biomass plants and combined heat and power plants (for suitable wood qualities)
- industrial applications
Depending on the wood quality and material properties, either material recycling or – if this is not possible – energetic utilization takes place in compliance with the applicable legal regulations.
Advantages of mechanical wood recycling
Mechanical wood recycling offers numerous ecological and economic advantages.
Conservation of Natural Resources
The reuse of wood reduces the demand for virgin wood and contributes to the preservation of natural forests.
Environmental and Climate Protection
By recycling wood, waste is reduced and the need for energy-intensive primary raw materials is lowered. At the same time, the carbon bound in the wood remains in the material cycle for as long as possible.
High Raw Material Quality
Modern processing technologies enable the production of high-quality wood fractions for a wide range of industrial applications.
Cost-effectiveness
Recycled wood represents a valuable raw material for the wood-based materials industry and supports an economical supply of raw materials.
Circular Economy
Mechanical wood recycling extends the life cycle of wood as a raw material and makes a significant contribution to a sustainable circular economy.
Sustainability through Modern Wood Processing
With the responsible use of natural resources, wood recycling is gaining increasing importance. Modern processing plants enable efficient utilization of waste wood and wood residues and create high-quality raw materials for new products.
Through innovative shredding and separation technologies, wood is used multiple times before it is energetically recovered – if material recycling is no longer possible. In this way, resources are conserved, waste is reduced, and the environment is sustainably relieved.
